What is Couples Therapy?

Clients who undergo Couples Therapy work one-on-one with a trained therapist in an environment that provides confidentiality, safety, and empathy. The purpose of couples therapy is to restore a level of functioning in couples who achieve relationship distress. In a couples therapy session, the therapist engages the client in identifying the source of dissatisfaction and distress in the relationship and works with the couple to develop goals and a well-thought-out plan for improving or eliminating the source of dissatisfaction and distress so that the relationship reaches a better and healthier level of functioning.

How long will Couples Therapy last?

There are many different reasons a couple might want to receive individual therapy. Problems may have resulted because of poor communication skills, incompatibility, or other serious issues such as domestic violence, alcoholism, depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Couples therapy is also helpful for couples who have issues in the area of intimacy and sexual difficulties. Couples therapy typically includes both partners, but sometimes, one partner chooses to work with a therapist alone. Couples counseling is usually short-term, requiring five (5) or six (6) sessions. The specific treatment plan and the length of the process depend on why the couple is in therapy, the severity of the problem, and what they hope to achieve.

How do I get started?

The first step is to call and schedule the initial appointment. You will receive information about the services that we provide, payment options, our confidentiality policy, and an explanation of the process. You will also be asked some questions so that we can assess if we can help or if you need more intensive treatment. We may direct you to seek intensive treatment, or we will schedule you to come in for an initial consultation.

During the initial consultation, you will have an opportunity to see if you have a good rapport with the therapist, and the therapist will be able to learn more about you, why you are looking to receive individual therapy, and what outcome you are seeking to achieve. At the end of the initial consultation, if you and your partner feel you will benefit from couples therapy, you will decide on an available time slot that works with your schedule. Couples therapy sessions occur once a week, and each session lasts fifty (50) minutes.
