What is Group Therapy?

In Group therapy a small group of clients come together, under the guidance of a trained therapist, to talk about issues, and discuss problems that are similar in nature.  Some of the topics include things such as substance abuse, domestic violence, divorce recovery, childhood abuse, depression and anxiety, PTSD, and issues with eating and perception of one’s body image. The therapist creates a safe, comfortable, and judgment free environment, where clients work out their personal problems and issues and provide support and encouragement to others. Clients that have trouble with interpersonal relationships can benefit from the social interaction that occurs during group therapy.

How long will Group Therapy last?

How often your group meets will depend on what you are working on in group therapy and what you and your therapist determine will best meet your needs. Some groups only meet once a week, whereas some are more intensive and meet three times a week initially, and then may decrease frequency over time.

How do I get started?

The first step is to check out website to see if a group is scheduled. The date and time will be included in the group information page, as well as information about the subject matter to be addressed, and who would benefit the most from participating in this group. Groups will be identified as “closed” or “open.” An open group allows new members to join at any time. A closed group does not allow new members to join once the group has begun. Closed groups may remain closed for a period or indefinitely.

If you see a group that you are interested in, call and register for the group. At that time, you will be given information about payment options, our confidentiality policy, and an explanation of the process. You will also be asked some questions so that we can assess if we can help or if you need more intensive treatment. We may direct you to seek intensive treatment, or we will schedule you to come in for an initial consultation. Group therapy sessions occur once a week, and each session lasts seventy-five (75) minutes.
